Green Fleet – San Diego Launches Solar-Powered EV Charging Stations

The EV ARC is designed to fit inside a 9×8 parking space and can park on top of the ballast pad so no parking area is wasted. It can fuel up to five vehicles at a time. Transportation continues to be the largest source of local emissions and the city has established several goals to shift vehicle fuels from gasoline to electricity and other alternatives. It also sets goals to increase the use of public transportation, biking, and walking as alternatives to driving.

City of San Diego Launches New Electric Vehicle Solar-Powered Charging Stations

The City of San Diego has launched a pilot program that will use solar power to charge the city’s electric vehicle fleet. “The EV ARC solar EV charging stations will allow the city to take advantage of San Diego’s most plentiful natural resource and reduce emissions from city operations that harm human health and contribute to the climate crisis,” said Mayor Todd Gloria.

Government Fleet – San Diego Launches Solar-Powered EV Charging Stations

As part of the City of San Diego’s climate action goal of halving its greenhouse gas emissions by 2035, it has deployed two of Beam Global’s Electric Vehicle Autonomous Renewable Charger (EV ARC) solar-powered charging systems. Over the next six months, the pilot program will use solar power to charge the citie’s electric vehicle fleet and provide emergency preparedness assets. Mayor Todd Gloria revealed the news at a press conference on April 22 featuring 10 new Chevrolet Bolt EV fleet vehicles, one law enforcement Ford Interceptor Hybrid, and one fire department Ford Interceptor Hybrid, as well as the Beam Global charging systems.

Olathe, Kansas, Installs Public EV Chargers Through Federal Funding

The City of Olathe, Kansas, announced on March 25 that it has deployed six solar-powered EV charging systems at public locations in the city. The city purchased the charging systems from Beam Global with the support of federal grant funding from Metropolitan Energy Center, which arranges federal funding for green energy projects on behalf of local entities. This marks the first time a municipality in Kansas has deployed public EV charging stations.

California: Electrify America Adds 30 Solar-Powered AC Charging Stations

California: Electrify America Adds 30 Solar Powered EV ARC™ Charging Stations

Electrify America recently officially launched 30 new solar-powered, off-grid public charging stations in rural California. Unlike the DC fast chargers that are the main part of Electrify America’s network, these stations are small AC Level 2 charging points (two stalls per station), supplied by Beam Global (formerly Envision Solar). The EV ARC charging stations are equipped with a 4.3 kW solar array (peak output) and, depending on the version, a 24, 32 or 40 kWh battery energy storage to remain operational even at night.

They’re located in rural areas throughout Southern California’s Central Valley and inland areas, in places like Bakersfield, Riverside, and Folsom. Twenty of the 30 solar-powered charging stations are at health care centers. That’s because Electrify America identified educational and health care institutions as ideal charging points because of high amounts of traffic and extended hours of access.

Electrify America Rolls Out 30 Solar-Powered EV Charging Stations In Rural California — And They’re Free To Use

As Jennifer Sensiba and others have been pointing out recently, rural areas need electric vehicle charging stations too. Electrify America is stomping across the country building out a large ultrafast charging network, and it has clearly learned a great deal about these needs and the challenges serving these needs in the process. One challenge in rural areas is they may not have the best electricity capacity to power new ultrafast charging stations, or any charging stations at all. A solution? Good ol’ solar power.
