Running on fresh air? Nope, sunshine. Californian CleanTech company Beam Global is claiming a world record for the longest flight in a production electric aircraft powered by off-grid, renewable solar energy.

The solar array was provided by Beam Global, a company based in San Diego that puts energy from the sun to many uses. CEO Desmond Wheatley was on hand for the Modesto arrival. “We believe all aviation will electrify,” he said. “In the meantime, this sort of thing will be the beginning of it.” Electric aviation has taken only baby steps so far, despite investments by established manufacturers and startups around the world. The planes depend on batteries, which are heavy and need to be recharged often with the current technologies.
Beam Global Company is attempting to set a record on Wednesday for the longest solar-powered electric flight. The journey began on Wednesday morning in Fresno at Chandler Executive Airport. We spoke with pilot Joseph Oldham about what made this flight different and what it would mean to him if the flight ended up breaking the record.

FRESNO, Calif. (FOX26) — An electric aircraft is planned to set a world record for the longest flight ever, powered only by off-grid renewable energy. The plane took off early morning July 14 and is scheduled to land back in Fresno on July 17.
