We are so very fortunate. The lifestyles we have, the security we enjoy, the opportunities and, above all, the freedom we take for granted. The United States is a nation in which most citizens rarely, in a whole lifetime, have to consider challenges which daily confront the peoples of many other regions. Even the most unfortunate members of our society, hard though their lives certainly must be, are generally far better off than people living in the troubled or violent or starved regions of this planet.But we did not get all these privileges by accident. It might not have been this way. It has not always been certain. Many among us have sacrificed a great deal to secure the lives we take for granted. Today, on Veterans Day, we thank those who have made sacrifices – small, large and ultimate – to defend all that we hold dear. At Beam we particularly recognize our employees, shareholders and customers who have served in the armed forces. Thank you.Just as the past was uncertain, so too is the future. And recognizing that, we thank our customers and all those who are doing their best. Through their efforts to reduce harmful impacts on this country and planet, from environmental, economic and geopolitical pressures, they are simultaneously defending what our veterans defended. In so doing, they make it less likely that others like them will have to go into harm’s way to do so in the future.
