The Premier Forum for Global EV Battery Recycling & Reuse Initiatives

Welcome to the EV BATTERY RECYCLING & REUSE 2020 Exhibition and Conference where leading automotive companies will meet with battery recycling experts in Frankfurt, Germany to explore end-of-service battery recycling and repurposing initiatives for the next-generation of electric vehicle batteries.

The automotive industry is fast-evolving and with it a rapid growth in manufacturing of lithium-ion batteries for use in electric vehicles. With earlier developed EV batteries now approaching the end-of-life for their automotive usefulness, it is now increasingly important to address the economic, environmental, and strategic benefits of recycling and repurposing spent batteries and to establish a circular economy.

Recycling Initiatives

By 2025 Nissan estimates there will be tens of thousands of electric vehicles which will contain end-of-service batteries. It’s important that these are recycled efficiently to counter the ongoing scarcities of essential raw materials and to reduce the industry’s reliance on environmentally intensive mining for battery development. New innovations can rapidly extract valuable materials from existing battery packs and change the chemistries to ensure successful recycle to produce new electric vehicles.

Reuse Initiatives

As EV batteries reach end-of-service they are still able to store at least 70% of their original capacity which can be repurposed for “second life” energy storage uses in new applications such as; electrical grids and communications towers, as well as energy storage for solar farms, wind farms, and other renewable sources. As manufacturers produce battery packs with varying mechanical and chemical complexities, one of the key challenges for the industry is to achieve a degree of standardization across global manufacturers to enable repurposing initiatives to take place.

Key topics on this year’s agenda include:

  • Economic fundamentals of electric vehicle battery recycling and reuse
  • Exploring electric vehicles battery recycling techniques and battery reuseinitiatives
  • New raw materials extraction and processing strategies for recycling EV battery packs
  • Latest research in repurposing electric vehicle batteries for new energy storage solutions
  • Upcoming environmental regulations and safety standards for managing end-of-life batteries
  • Manufacturer case studies on standardization and how to achieve a circular economy

This exhibition and conference will provide a forum for all stakeholders across the electric vehicles battery supply chain; from suppliers and service providers to equipment manufacturers for the automotive industry, to network and build cross-market relationships and to discuss the real challenges and opportunities in recycling and repurposing end-of-service batteries for economic, environmental, and strategic benefits to the industry.
