Northwest Indian College BeamBike™

Northwest Indian College (NWIC), chartered by and located within the Lummi Nation in Washington State, has taken a pioneering step toward clean transportation and energy resilience. As the first accredited Tribal college to deploy Beam Global’s BeamBike™ solar-powered e‑bike charging system, NWIC is setting a new sustainability benchmark across Tribal higher education. With students representing more than 90 Tribal nations across North America, NWIC integrates environmental stewardship into its academics, operations, and community programs. The BeamBike™ installation further strengthens the College’s commitment to green energy, clean mobility access, and Tribal energy sovereignty.

Challenge

NWIC sought to expand clean, campus-wide micro‑mobility options for students, staff, and faculty. Their goals included:
• Offering safe, accessible e‑bike charging without relying on the electrical grid
• Avoiding construction, trenching, or permitting that could impact culturally important areas
• Reducing fire risks associated with indoor battery charging
• Aligning campus operations with Tribal energy sovereignty and sustainability commitments
• Increasing access to low‑cost, active, and clean transportation for the campus community

NWIC needed a deploy-anywhere solution
that supported e‑bike adoption without
adding load to local utilities.

Solution: Beam Global’s BeamBike™ System

NWIC selected the BeamBike™ solar-powered e‑bike charging system, a fully off‑grid mobility solution that generates and stores its own clean electricity. BeamBike™ Features

• Twelve weatherized connection points compatible with any e‑bike charger
• Integrated solar power generation + on-board battery storage
• Charging resilience during grid outages
• Safe outdoor charging to reduce building fire risk
• No trenching, wiring, construction, or permitting required
• Portable, modular, and rapidly deployable

Results

1. Strengthened Tribal Energy Sovereignty
BeamBike™ enables NWIC to generate its own clean transportation energy on Tribal land— independent from traditional utilities.
2. Expanded Clean Micro‑Mobility Access
The BeamBike™ station supports widespread e‑bike adoption, offering a sustainable alternative to vehicle-based travel across campus.
3. Zero Environmental Impact at Installation
Because BeamBike™ is fully off-grid and requires no construction, NWIC avoided disruptions to culturally significant land.
4. Enhanced Emergency Preparedness
Onboard energy storage allows charging and power access even during outages, making BeamBike™ an energy resilience asset.
5. Model for Other Tribal Communities
NWIC’s deployment provides a scalable blueprint for Tribal colleges and communities seeking clean mobility solutions without grid dependency.

Why BeamBike™

NWIC evaluated several micro-mobility charging options but required a solution that aligned with Tribal values, preserved land, and delivered immediate functionality without dependence on the grid. BeamBike™ stood out because it combines clean energy generation, safety, resilience, and cultural compatibility, all in a deploy-anywhere product. By choosing BeamBike™, NWIC ensured its micro-mobility expansion would be sustainable, cost-effective, and fully within Tribal control.
